What this site is

An independent publication about telescopes and astronomical observing. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any telescope manufacturer or retailer. Brand and product names belong to their respective owners and are used descriptively.

Accuracy and the limits of what we can promise

We take accuracy seriously and check the arithmetic. We do not warrant that every figure on the site is correct, current or complete. Specifications change, products are revised without being renamed, and manufacturers publish figures that disagree with each other. Verify anything that matters against the manufacturer before you buy or before you rely on it.

Where a specification could not be verified, it is omitted rather than estimated. An absent figure means we did not have a source we trusted, not that the figure is zero.

Calculator output

The calculators implement standard optical formulas and return results for the values you enter. They are planning tools. Real performance depends on atmospheric seeing, sky darkness, the condition and collimation of your optics, your own eyesight and how long you have been dark adapted. Treat every result as a starting point rather than a promise, and trust what you see through the eyepiece over any number on a screen.

Safety

Observing the Sun through any optical instrument without a certified full-aperture filter fitted over the FRONT of that instrument can cause instant and permanent blindness. Nothing on this site is a substitute for reading and following the safety instructions supplied with your own equipment and with your own filter. You are responsible for your own safety and for the safety of anybody you allow to use your equipment, particularly children.

Equipment also carries ordinary physical risks. Telescopes are heavy, tripods tip, and counterweights fall. Follow the manufacturer instructions, which govern.

Intellectual property

The text, tables, calculators and design of this site are ours. You may quote short passages with attribution and a link. You may not republish substantial portions, reproduce the reference tables wholesale, or use the content to train a commercial model without written permission. Product images are supplied by the retailer through its product advertising interface and remain the property of their owners.

Links to other sites are provided for convenience. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content, their accuracy or their privacy practices.

Limitation of liability

The site is provided as is, without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the site, from reliance on any information here, or from any purchase you make through a link on it.
