Pick the right telescope and actually see something

Two things decide whether somebody enjoys this hobby or abandons it, and almost nobody says them out loud. The mount matters more than the telescope, and a telescope will not show you the colours in a photograph. Everything here is built on those two facts.

Solar safety: never point a telescope, finder or binocular at the Sun without a certified full-aperture solar filter fitted over the FRONT of the instrument. Filters that thread onto the eyepiece sit where the heat is concentrated, can crack without warning, and cause instant permanent blindness. Two things worth knowing before you spend anything

The mount matters more than the telescope

A cheap department store telescope on a wobbly tripod is the single most common reason beginners give up. At 150x a tremor of a fraction of a millimetre becomes a visible jump, and a mount at its limit takes five or ten seconds to settle after every focus adjustment. A superb telescope on an inadequate mount delivers a worse view than a modest telescope on a solid one.

A telescope will not show colourful nebulae

Human night vision runs on rod cells, which are nearly monochrome, so the Orion Nebula appears as grey-green mist and galaxies as faint grey ovals no matter how large the aperture. The photographs are hours of stacked exposure through a camera, not what an eye sees.
