ZWO Seestar S30 Pro Review: A Telescope or a Camera?

The Seestar S30 Pro is the clearest example yet that a smart telescope is an astrophotography appliance rather than a telescope, and judged as an appliance it is very good. Buy it if you want images of nebulae and galaxies from a light polluted garden with no learning curve and no eyepiece. Skip it if you want to look at planets, because ZWO states plainly that this product is not suitable for planetary viewing and there is no eyepiece to look through.

It photographs nebulae from a city balcony in ten minutes. It also will not show you Saturn.

  • It works from a city. The built in light pollution filtering plus live stacking pulls nebulae out of a sky where an eyepiece would show nothing at all.
  • Setup is genuinely a few minutes with no polar alignment, no balancing and no collimation.
  • At 3.64 lb it goes in hand luggage, which no conventional imaging rig does.
  • The wide angle camera makes Milky Way and star trail shots possible from the same device, which broadens what it is good for.

Where it falls short

  • It is not suitable for planets, which ZWO states in its own product information. If Saturn and Jupiter are why you want a telescope, this is the wrong purchase.
  • There is no eyepiece and none can be fitted. You look at a screen, and some people find that removes the point entirely.
  • The aperture is small, so it works by stacking many exposures rather than by gathering a lot of light at once. Faint targets take real time.
  • It is a closed system. What the app does is what you get, and there is no path to upgrading the mount, the optics or the camera separately.

Can the Seestar S30 Pro see planets?

No, and ZWO says so directly in its product information: it is suitable for deep sky objects, the Moon and the Sun, but not for viewing planets. The small aperture and short focal length cannot produce a useful planetary image scale. If planets are the goal, buy a Maksutov or a Schmidt-Cassegrain instead.

Do you look through a Seestar?
