Solar Filter vs Eyepiece Projection: Safe Solar Viewing
A full aperture filter fitted over the front of the telescope rejects the light before it enters, which is the standard safe method. Eyepiece projection sends the full concentrated beam through the telescope and out onto a card, which never goes near your eye but does cook the inside of your instrument. Use the front filter for viewing; use projection only for group demonstration with equipment you accept may be damaged, and never with a fragile eyepiece.

Are eyepiece-end solar filters safe?
No. Screw-in filters that fit at the eyepiece sit at the focus of concentrated sunlight and have been known to crack without warning. If you have one that came with an old telescope, dispose of it.
Can I use eclipse glasses over the telescope?
No. Eclipse glasses are for naked-eye use only. A telescope gathers far more light and will destroy them and your eye. Only a filter designed and rated for full aperture telescope use is appropriate.
How do I check a solar filter is safe?
Hold it up to a bright lamp and look for pinholes, scratches or separation. Check that it fits tightly enough that wind cannot dislodge it. Any doubt at all means do not use it.
