Celestron NexStar 8SE Review: Still the One to Buy?

The NexStar 8SE puts a genuinely capable 8 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain on a computerised mount that finds objects for you, and for planetary and lunar observing from a suburban garden it is very hard to beat. Buy it if finding things yourself is the part of astronomy you do not want, and if you value a telescope that breaks into pieces you can carry one at a time. Skip it if your budget is the constraint, because the same money buys a 10 inch Dobsonian that shows more and never needs batteries.

  • A 2032mm focal length in a tube barely longer than your forearm, which is what makes 8 inches of aperture liveable in a small house.
  • SkyAlign genuinely works. Centre three bright things, name none of them, and the mount aligns.
  • It comes apart into three pieces, each of which one person can carry, which is not true of an 8 inch Dobsonian.
  • Planetary and lunar views at this aperture and focal ratio are the reason people keep this telescope for decades.

Where it falls short

  • The single fork arm is the honest weakness. At high magnification a nudge of the focuser sets off a visible wobble that takes a couple of seconds to settle, and that is inherent to the design rather than a fault.
  • It eats AA batteries. Almost every owner ends up buying a mains adapter or a power pack, and you should budget for that from the start.
  • The supplied 25mm eyepiece is a starting point, not a finish. Getting the most out of the aperture means buying glass.
  • As an alt-azimuth fork it rotates the field, so long exposure deep sky imaging needs a wedge or a different mount entirely.

Owner reports have been remarkably stable for years. The praise concentrates on planets, the Moon and globular clusters, and on how quickly SkyAlign gets a beginner observing. The criticism concentrates on two things: vibration from the single fork arm at high power, and power consumption. The other consistent thread is about expectations. Deep sky objects at f/10 from a light polluted garden look like faint smudges, and owners who bought this expecting photographs through the eyepiece say so. Is the NexStar 8SE good for beginners?

It is, with one caveat. SkyAlign removes the hardest beginner problem, which is finding anything at all, and the aperture is large enough that the results reward the effort. The caveat is cost per inch of aperture: a beginner who is happy to learn the sky will see more through a Dobsonian at the same price. If the alternative is giving up because nothing can be found, the 8SE is money well spent.

Can you do astrophotography with a NexStar 8SE?

Planetary and lunar imaging with a high frame rate camera works well, because those exposures are measured in milliseconds and field rotation does not matter. Long exposure deep sky imaging does not work on the alt-azimuth fork as supplied, because the field rotates. You would need an equatorial wedge, and at that point a German equatorial mount is usually the better purchase.

Does the NexStar 8SE need a power supply?

In practice, yes. It will run on AA batteries and it will run through them quickly, particularly in cold weather when slewing draws hard. Nearly every long term owner uses a mains adapter at home or a portable power pack in the field, and it is fair to treat that as part of the price of the telescope.

The Dobsonian, at any given price. Aperture is what determines how much light reaches your eye, and a Dobsonian spends almost nothing on the mount. How much does the vibration really matter?

At low and medium power it is a non issue. Above roughly 150x you will see the image shiver for a second or two after touching the focuser, which is a nuisance during fine planetary detail work rather than a barrier. Vibration suppression pads under the tripod feet noticeably shorten the settling time and are the cheapest meaningful upgrade to the telescope.
