Is the AstroMaster 130EQ a good beginner telescope?
It is a reasonable one. The optics are fine for the price and the aperture is enough to show real detail. The two things that hold it back are a light mount and a bundled 20mm eyepiece with an erect image corrector that softens the view. Budget for one better eyepiece and it becomes a considerably better telescope.
Why should I replace the 20mm eyepiece?
It contains a prism that flips the image the right way up for terrestrial viewing, which is useless for astronomy and costs contrast and sharpness. A simple 20 to 25mm plossl or wide angle eyepiece is inexpensive and produces a visibly cleaner view. This is the highest value upgrade to this telescope.
Do I need to polar align it?
For it to make sense, yes, at least roughly. An equatorial mount is designed so that one axis follows the sky, which only works if that axis points at the celestial pole. Can I do astrophotography with it?
Short exposures of the Moon, yes. Deep sky imaging, no. The mount is not stable enough or precise enough to carry a camera for long exposures, and the tube is at the limit of what it holds steadily. Deep sky imaging starts with a mount that costs more than this whole telescope.
