Is a zoom optically worse?
Modern zooms are respectable, with the compromise showing as a narrower field at the low power end rather than as softness. For planets, where field of view matters least, they perform very well.
Do I need two inch eyepieces?
Only if your focuser accepts them. They allow wider fields at low power than 1.25 inch can physically deliver, which matters for large nebulae and clusters.
What focal lengths should a set cover?
A low power for finding and wide views, a medium for most observing and a high power for planets. Three well spaced eyepieces plus a Barlow covers essentially everything.
