Polar Scope vs Drift Alignment

A polar scope gets you aligned in a couple of minutes and is comfortably accurate enough for visual observing and short exposures. Drift alignment takes far longer and is far more accurate, which only matters once exposures get long. What if I cannot see Polaris?

Does a wedge help with a fork mount?

It is what allows a fork mounted telescope to track equatorially at all, which matters for imaging and not for visual use.
