Laser Collimator vs Collimation Cap: Which to Use?

Quick answer

A Cheshire or collimation cap is cheap, cannot itself go out of alignment, and is what experienced observers trust. A laser is far faster and easier in the dark, but a laser that is not itself collimated will confidently align your telescope wrongly. Buy the cap as your reference; buy the laser for speed, and check it against the cap.

What is a star test?

Defocusing a bright star slightly and checking the rings are concentric. It is the final check that matters, since it tests the whole system on the sky rather than a tool in the focuser.
